Fall Footwear Trends

When fall arrives, you may not rush out to buy a fluffy furry jacket. Or scope out the cashmere sweaters online. Or go mad for that new plaid suit. But there is one fabulous fashion find that will definitely satisfy the urge to splurge on a new style season — a new pair of shoes. Here is all the latest shoe news:

Start with boot camp. Boots are anything but basic anymore. They’re taking big strides in the footwear world. From ankle booties to glamorous thigh-highs, the boot camp is rapidly expanding its rankings in the fashion world, setting trend after trend, year after year. This fall, the newest boots are velvet, they have built-in socks, and they may even be covered in elaborate embroidery. And if you’re really ready to par-tay in your boo-tays, then do a dance in shiny white patent leather or glittering silver metallic. And of course, if you only buy one pair of new boots this fall, color them red — THE color for fall. There is indeed a boot for every occasion…from slushing it out in the snow to doing combat maneuvers on city streets to celebrating with cocktails at your favorite club. Dress them up or down, you’ll want several pairs in your shoe closet this year.

Slip into something comfortable. Slides, slippers, mules and slip-on shoes are some of the biggest trends of the year. This backless style shoe originated in Ancient Rome where “mulleus calceus” shoes were worn by magistrates, but they went on to become boudoir favorites in the 18th and 19th centuries. Eventually movie stars popularized mules in the 1950s, and today, these little slides are more popular than ever. Pointed toe slip-ons lead the way in supple suede or velvet, fluffed, furred and feathered, embellished and embroidered. Loafer-inspired slides are more on the practical side. In leopard print, they are the only touch you need to make an old outfit instantly look new. And watch for mules with spiky heels to click their glamorous way into the holiday party season ahead. Wear them with fishnet socks for even more festive fun.

Pump it up. While the boots and the slides are stepping up and stepping out in a big way this fall, heels are also walking on the wilder side. The stiletto pump may still be a classic, but new details, colors and silhouettes are bringing the old basic back to new life. And if sky-high heels aren’t for you, then check out all the kitten heels in footwear collections this fall. Block heels are another major trend especially when done in loafer-style pumps. Artfully designed heels give some of these shoes a major reason to be put on view in a museum exhibit. Graphic patterns and floral embroidery are also cause for breaking out the credit card. Then there are plenty of ankle wraps, buckles and bows. And in shimmering satin, pumps will steal the spotlight for holiday soirees.

Flats are always a good idea. Those spikey heels may be beautiful to look at on our closet shelves, but when it comes to trudging around in the real world, day in and night out, there’s nothing better than a wonderful pair of flats to get us there in style. Whether it’s old-school sneakers, ballerina slip-ons or menswear oxfords, there’s always the need for another pair of comfortable shoes to carry us on our journeys wherever we’re headed. And if you’re really lucky, you can always rely on that favorite pair of old cowboy boots you’ve been stomping around in for the last 109 years. Some things never go out of style.
